Procedures for Skin Removal and Plastic Surgery

Some of the newer techniques in plastic surgery, such as tissue expansion and flap surgery, are very popular nowadays. One of the most practiced procedures is skin graft, a skin surgery to remove skin from healthy areas of the body and use it to cover damaged skin.

The two main types of skin graft are:

  • Full thickness: removal of the top layer of skin (epidermis) and all the dermis.
  • Partial or split thickness: removal of epidermis and a smaller part of the dermis.

The procedure involves general or local anesthetics depending on the treatment prior to the surgery. In the procedure, the skin is connected with the blood supply and held in place with special glue, staples or stitches to help protect from infection. The skin plastic surgery can take two weeks to heal. Full rest is advised.

Two basic procedures are:

  • Tissue expansion: enables to grow additional skin used to help reconstruct nearby areas. In breast reconstruction and for large wounds is commonly used.
  • Flap surgery: to transfer a living piece of tissue, along with blood vessels, to another part of the body. Breast reconstruction, fractures, cleft lip and palates require this skin surgery procedure.

Cosmetic Dermatology Abroad

So far, skin surgery has been widely used as a technique to beautify, revitalize and enhance appearance. And it has been exceptionally high in its costs in countries like the U.K., the U.S. and Canada. Demand for dermatological surgery has allowed the emerging trend of medical tourism to rise in low-income countries.

Every year, millions of medical patients flock to India, Thailand, Colombia and Belgium, where a wide variety of skin procedures of the highest quality are offered at a much lower price.
