Mri scan

MRI Scan

Thanks to the pictures of organs and body structures that MRI or magnetic resonance imaging produces, problems such as tumors, bleeding, blood vessel diseases, injuries and infections can be observed in minute detail to set up the best treatment plan for each patient.

MRI scan uses a magnetic field and radio wave energy pulses to create images of the inside of the body. The images have a digital quality and can be reviewed remotely by clinics and operating rooms when necessary, for instance during surgery procedures. During the magnetic resonance imaging test, the MRI technologist pictures the required body parts and sends the results to the radiologist, who is always needed to interpret the visual findings.

MRI scan cost depends on the individual requirements, but the basic price can be set around $250.

Reasons for MRI Scan

Magnetic resonance imaging can be performed for many reasons, when other tests like X-ray, ultrasound scan or CT scan, do not provide the necessary information. In some cases, depending on the examined body part, a contrast agent may be used to increase MRI scan resolution details.

The main reasons for MRI scan are:

mri-scan_Small

  • Head – brain tumors, aneurysm, bleeding, nerve injury and damages caused by stroke. MRI scan is also used for finding problems in the optic nerves and in the auditory nerves.
  • Chest – MRI scan checks the heart, valves, blood vessels, lungs, and can identify lung cancer or breast cancer.

For cardiovascular problems, cardiac MRI is performed to complement other imaging techniques such as echocardiography and cardiac CT.

Among the applications of cardiac MRI we find the assessment and diagnosis of:

  • Myocardial ischemia
  • Cardiomyopathies
  • Myocarditis
  • Iron overload
  • Vascular diseases
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Blood vessels – in order to check the flow of blood, MRA or magnetic resonance angiography is used to find problems in the arteries and veins.
  • Abdomen and pelvis – observes problems in the organs (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and bladder) and damaged structures in the belly. MRI scan may look for abdominal bleeding, blockage and infections. In men, it screens for prostate problems and in women, conditions of the uterus and ovaries.
  • Bones and joints – arthritis, bone marrow, cartilage and temporomandibular problems, bone tumors, torn ligaments.
  • Spine – checks for spinal stenosis, disc bulges and spinal tumor.

MRI Scan Precautions

It is important to verify if the patient is allergic to medicines or to the iodine used in the contrast material. Pregnant women cannot have MRI scan performed.

Metalic implants like blood vessel devices (coronary artery stents, pacemakers, ICD’s or metal heart valves) require special attention. Similarly, metal pins in the body, dental work, cochlear implants, infusion pumps, or artificial limbs should be mentioned to the doctor before MRI scan and any other metallic objects or accessories should be taken off.

MRI Scan Cost

For those who do not want to wait until MRI is available at the local hospital, it is also possible to have the procedure done privately at an accessible price. Private MRI scan cost also varies in price, but below you will find the list of standard approximate prices for MRI scan.
