Health Care in the US and Local Hospitals - Some Facts and Figures

In order to be a registered health care unit in the US, institutions need to comply with the American Hospital Association’s criteria; however membership is not a prerequisite to operate local US hospitals. On the other hand, they need to be accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, which is a guarantee of standards and quality.

Besides individual local US hospitals, there are multi-hospitals nationwide, which means that several local American hospitals are owned and maintained by a central organization. Yet another form of possible conglomeration is Networking, which can be defined as a group of cooperating hospitals, medical practitioners along with insurers and agencies to offer a broad spectrum of medical services.

Local US hospitals are predominantly operated by private enterprises, 62% of hospitals are non-profit, 20% are government owned and 18% are for-profit hospitals.

Some interesting data worth contemplation – the World Health Organization has ranked the U.S. health care system as the highest in costs, first in responsiveness and 37th in overall performance.
