 At a psychological level, the state of well-being is defined as Mental Health. It involves the ability the individual has to enjoy life, to create balance between efforts and activities, and the successful adaptation of emotions according to demands of life.

Mental Health in Modern Societies

The term “Mental Hygiene” was coined in the 19th century as the precursor of disciplines that promote well-being and mental health in order to preserve the mind from influences which might inhibit its capacities.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of the world’s population suffers from mild or severe degree of mental illnesses, with notorious impact on self-esteem, the everyday life functions and interpersonal relationships. Emotionally unstable individuals might develop drug and alcohol abuse, vandalism, aggression and trigger other social problems.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty that has evolved to treat mental disorders. Social work, psychotherapists, clinical psychology and public health specialist are some of the professions involved. They offer treatments a wide range of services for mental disorders (mental illnesses) medical treatments, counseling and advocacy.

  • Psychotherapy – it is primarily a medicine based treatment, but offers complementary mental health services. (Gestalt therapy, psychoanalysis, cognitive behavior, dialectical behavioral).
  • Activity, recreational and occupational therapies, to promote healing through engagement and immersion. (Walking and making handycrafts)
  • Expressive – Therapies involving arts. (Music, art, dance, drama, poetry)
  • Alternative – as a branch of alternative medicine, some of them have not reached the stage of academic consensus. (Prayer, yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic, homeopathy, hypnotherapy.)
  • Meditation – Mental health and emotional behavior can be influenced by increased awareness. Meditation provides the practitioner an ability to consciously identify and distinguish emotions. (Mindfulness, Concentration, Compassion.)
  • Biofeedback – to gain control of brainwaves and physical processes in order to decrease anxiety. It increases well-being, relaxation and body-control.
  • Group therapy – Strong emotional support, empathy and involvement in a community. (Expressive and support groups, psychoeducation).

  • Keep good relationships with family and friends.
  • Stressful events are not unbearable problems – keep a long-term perspective and broader contexts.
  • Accept what cannot be changed.
  • Develop realistic goals.

  • Exercise self-discovery.
  • Develop self-confidence.
  • Keep yourself presentable; take care of mind and body, exercise regularly.
