Astigmatism treatment

Astigmatism – Treatment and Surgery Abroad

Astigmatism is a treatable imperfection of the eye. In its mild form it is commonly present at birth or at early stages of life, which can usually be corrected easily with lenses or operation. The misalignment of the two eyes causes blurred vision at all distances, especially when combined with myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). Some additional symptoms are headaches and eyestrains. It is necessary to visit the doctor when the quality of vision is restraining the person from enjoying daily activities or interfering with normal tasks.

Astigmatism – Tests and Treatment Options

Astigmatism can be diagnosed with a comprehensive eye examination. Currently several testing methods are available to determine how the eyes focus and how to compensate the reduced vision. Eye examination includes:

  • Visual acuity test – the patient reads letters from the distance.Astigmatism-treatment-abroad_Small
  • Keratometry – the curvature of the cornea is measured with an instrument. When more detailed shapes of the cornea are necessary, for instance for surgical purposes, a corneal topography is done.
  • Refraction – a phoropter is placed in front of the patient’s eyes to measure how he/she focuses light. A retinoscope is utilized to determine the response of the lenses.

Astigmatism can be corrected with eye glasses, contact lenses or surgery. Astigmatism treatment abroad is a common option nowadays, especially for refractive or laser surgery, a method  to correct the shape of the cornea.

The most recommended method for treating astigmatism  when one’s eye condition is slight and there are no refraction problems is using corrective lenses or Toric lenses, which have bending power and can be accurately tailored for each patient.

Astigmatism Treatment Abroad

Patients who seek astigmatism surgery choose medical tourism for a number of reasons, which not only involve prices but also quality related services and post-op care. Incredible as it may sound, a patient can save up to 75% compared to astigmatism surgery in the U.K. or in the U.S., and they are fully insured when it comes to complications. Some companies even offer transport services, including cheaper plane tickets and affordable hotels.

Among the most frequent astigmatism treatment abroad we find:

  • LASIK surgery – using a keratome, the doctor makes a thin cut into the cornea and uses an excimer laser to burn the cornea.
  • Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
  • LASEK – an option when the patient has a thin cornea.

Astigmatism Surgery Cost

Most insurance companies cover around 80% of the treatment approved by the doctor, be it frames, lenses or surgery. Astigmatism surgery cost ranges between $1,500 and $3,000 in the U.S., so due to the favourable offers of medical tourism, astigmatism treatment abroad has become a popular option. In countries like Colombia, Mexico and India prices can be reduced by more than half.
