Retinal Detachment Repair

 The retina is the fine inner lining of the back of the eye, which receives the light refracted by the cornea and the lens. The retina is connected to the optic nerve which transmits the signals to the brain, where the stimuli are processed ensuring vision.

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina gets separated from the tissue underneath, mostly due to a progressively appearing tear or break in the retina. When the gel-like fluid filling the eyes can pass behind the detached parts of the retina, the process is accelerated. Only on rare occasions is retinal detachment caused by traumatic injuries.

What are the Signs of Retinal Detachment?

  • Floaters
  • Flashing lights
  • Vision overcast by a shadow

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is imperative to see an ophthalmologist as surgery is the only viable solution for peripheral retinal detachment repair and to prevent the central macular part of the retina from tearing off. If intervention does not come in time, a full retinal detachment repair may not bring substantial vision improvement.

What are the Techniques for Retinal Detachment Repair?

There are three standard retinal detachment repair procedures:

Scleral Buckling

  • Performed under general anesthesia

  • The eye is compressed with a buckle implanted at the back of the eye to push the retina back against the posterior wall of the eye.

Pneumatic retinoplexy

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Laser, freezing or electrical current is used to repair the retina
  • The vitreous area of the eye is injected with a gas bubble that pushes the retina to its place against the back wall of the eye.


  • A retinal detachment repair method used for more complicated or severe cases
  • The gel-like liquid of the eye is removed and is replaced with gas or silicone oil to compress the retina back to its place

In any case, retinal detachment repair recovery is a slow process, it may take several months till vision is restored. Keeping the head in the right position is essential for full recovery if bubble or gas is used in the repair.
