Abdominoplasty Abroad (Tummy Tuck Surgery)

Commonly known as tummy tuck, abdominoplasty refers to a surgical procedure in which fat and excess skin are removed from the middle and lower parts of the abdomen, to reduce the protruding sections and tighten its muscles.

Many people tend to accumulate excess fat in areas which usually do not respond to diet or exercise. When all attempts fail to contour the abdomen, patients may consider abdominoplasty, among other reasons because that skin section has suffered and is stretched.

Abdominoplasty abroad is one of the most popular surgical procedures in medical tourism.

Some common causes and factors that make tummy tuck desirable:

Weak abdominal muscles

  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy
  • Senescence
  • Instability of weight
  • Genetics

Not every individual is eligible for abdominoplasty surgery; therefore the plastic surgeon should revise the medical history in order to evaluate general health and to proceed with the evaluation process. In this stage it is important for the patient to set realistic expectations.

Abdominoplasty surgery enhances personal appearance and self-confidence, but it does not change your personality, so it is important to express and discuss your expectations with the surgeon before deciding to have the procedure.

Tummy tuck abroad offers excellent results and an idyllic environment for the procedure.

Main Abdominoplasty Procedures

Minor Abdominoplasty – The skin is removed in the lower abdomen area and from the hypogastric region. There is no need to move the umbilicus and the upper part of the abdomen remains untouched.

Minor Abdominoplasty Surgery and Liposuction – Fat is aspired before removal of the excess skin in the lower abdomen.

Major Abdominoplasty – In the surgical procedure the skin is detached from both lower and upper parts of the abdomen, excess skin is removed, and the belly button is moved to a new tightened skin region.

Major Abdominoplasty Surgery and Liposuction – Excess fat is aspirated, excess skin is removed. It is also recommended to perform a liposuction in both sides of the abdomen.

Who Qualifies For Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Men and women in good physical condition are the best candidates for abdominoplasty surgery. These individuals might be bothered by fat deposits or excess of abdominal skin, which does not respond to exercise or diet.

Abdominoplasty surgery is also helpful for women after multiple pregnancies. These women have stretched abdominal skin and excess of abdominal muscles, which cannot return to the normal state. Their skin has lost elasticity due to slight obesity, and the tummy tuck surgery can considerably improve it.

In contrast to individuals who have good shape and healthy habits, patients intending to lose weight do not qualify for the tummy tuck surgery. Other cases of refusal by the medical specialist are women who await pregnancies.

Basic Abdominoplasty Procedure

It takes from one to three hours, and consists of a first long incision along the hipbones above the pubic area, and a second one around the navel. Then, the cosmetic surgeon separates the skin all the way up until the ribs from the abdominal wall, and lifts a skin flap which reveals the muscles in the abdomen. These vertical muscles are stitched together into a new position, tightened and pulled close together, in order to provide a much more firm abdominal wall and to narrow the waistline.

Then the skin flap is stretched and the extra skin removed. The last step consists of stitching the incision, the application of dressings and the insertion of a temporary tube to drain the excess of fluid.

Tummy tuck cost depends on the type of procedure and if you are inland or if you are planning to have an abdominoplasty abroad.

Tummy Tuck Abroad Is Always An Option

As expected, costs for tummy tuck abroad depend on extra services, follow-up care and medical assistance, nevertheless abdominoplasty cost ranges between 1,500 and 2,500 USD with a complete medical pack.

Consultations before abdominoplasty surgery abroad include the detailed discussion of the patient’s medical history with the surgeon. Make sure the specialist is informed about allergies to antibiotics or anesthetics drugs, and also about recent illnesses, bad scarring, prolonged bleeding, connective-tissue disorders and previous surgeries.

  • Not to use pharmaceuticals which contain acetylsalicylic acid or blood thinning medications (aspirins, for example)
  • Stop smoking

Benefits, Risks and Follow-Up Care

In general, individuals who decide to have a tummy tuck surgery can expect a twofold benefit:

  • A firmer, flatter abdomen
  • And an improved psychological state

Despite the simplicity of the surgical procedure, some risks still exist for the patient, especially if they suffer from diabetes, poor circulation, abnormal blood clotting, or if the patient smokes. Some other common complications include:

  • Infection of the area, bleeding
  • Some necrosis in the area of the horizontal incision
  • Storage of fluid under the skin
  • Bruising
  • Long healing process
  • Chest infection after general anesthetic
  • Blood clot in the heart or lungs
  • Sore throat

After the procedure the patient is advised to sleep on the back, wear a support robe for some weeks, and avoid sexual activity for at least two weeks. Note that the incision lines stay visible in the abdomen area, and it takes around a year to flatten out and level the color. It is advised to exercise regularly and follow a balanced diet to avoid weight gain.
