Andrology – Clinics and Disorders Treated

Although the word andrology refers to the study of male biology, andrologists are medical specialists who study and treat the sexual health of male individuals. The two main divisions of andrology are infertility and impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction) treatment.

So andrology is a medical specialty focused on problems of the male reproductive system, most of which fall into one of the following categories:

  • Sexual problems
  • Prostate problems
  • Low testosterone

  • Diabetes and reproductive health

It is a rather new discipline; it has only been studied from the late 1960s. One of the most significant contributions of andrology has been the increased awareness in people that sexual dysfunction is a disease with plenty of treatment options available.

Andrology Clinic

Some clinics specialize in treating male infertility. The services they usually provide are:

  • Artificial Insemination – Used for fertility problems such as low sperm number or lack of strength and motility.
  • Diagnostic Testing – useful for finding appropriate treatments for couples.
  • IVF – In Vitro Fertilization, a technique to improve chances of pregnancy and successful childbearing.
  • Male Infertility Consultations – This branch focuses on couples with male infertility problems. They work along with a multidisciplinary andrology clinic team consisting of urologists, reproductive endocrinology specialists and physicians.
  • Sperm Freezing – also called sperm cryopreservation, a service offered for men who want to bank their sperm.  It may serve the needs of the IVF and Intra Uterine Insemination special units.

Some other andrology clinics offer specialized tests for sperm evaluation, using advanced microscopic equipment. Some of the tests include:
